A professional organization is seeking a Director of State Government Affairs. This role will focus on managing state legislative, regulatory, and grassroots activities, working across multiple states and collaborating with internal teams. The Director will be responsible for advancing key initiatives and positively affecting policy change in targeted regions.

Position Summary:

The Director of State Government Affairs will be one of three key staff members overseeing state legislative and regulatory activities. This role involves frequent travel, policy advocacy, and direct engagement with various stakeholders. The ideal candidate will possess extensive knowledge of state legislative processes and the ability to develop strategic lobbying initiatives. The position is fully remote, with travel to assigned states as required.

Key Responsibilities:

– Manage legislative and regulatory initiatives in assigned states to influence policy change.

– Assist in developing an annual strategic plan for targeted states.

– Respond promptly to unexpected legislative developments to protect organizational interests.

– Draft legislative and regulatory communications, including bills, amendments, and formal comments.

– Develop and implement grassroots strategies and outreach in targeted states.

– Provide testimony and represent the organization in hearings and meetings.

– Collaborate with retained lobbyists and build coalitions with local business organizations.

– Foster strong relationships with state agencies and build member engagement in legislative efforts.

– Develop training materials and provide grassroots education to members.

– Monitor and track state legislative and regulatory developments.

– Contribute to internal and external communications on state government affairs.

– Regularly update the website and regulatory database with current government affairs materials.

– Support member recruitment and retention through advocacy initiatives.

Qualifications:

– Bachelor’s degree or higher.

– Experience in state government, lobbying, or association work.

– Strong knowledge of state legislative processes and lobbying strategies.

– Excellent communication, negotiation, and organizational skills.

– Ability to travel frequently and on short notice.

– Experience in coordinating grassroots campaigns and policy advocacy.
